Formation of Compound Sentence

Compound Sentence (संयुक्त वाक्य) :-

Compound Sentence एक ऐसा Sentence होता है जिसमें कम से कम दो Clause होते हैं –

(i) Principal Clause

(ii) Co-ordinate Clause 

Example :-

(i) Ravi is honest and he is humble. 

Ravi is honest (Principal Cause) 

and he is humble (Co-ordinate Clause)

Clause (उपवाक्य) –  किसी वाक्य में आए हुए छोटे-छोटे वाक्यों को उपवाक्य कहते हैं।

Example – 

(i) The news that he died is wrong. 

The news is wrong (Clause) 

that he died (Clause) 

Clause निम्नलिखित तीन प्रकार का होता है –

(i) Principal Clause (प्रधान उपवाक्य) 

(ii) Co-ordinate Clause (सामानपदिय उपवाक्य) 

(iii) Sub-ordinate Clause (आश्रित उपवाक्य)

Principal Clause –  ऐसा उपवाक्य जो अपने अर्थ की पूर्णतया एवं स्पष्टता के लिए अपने आप में ही परिपूर्ण होता है principal clause कहलाता है।

Example –

(i)  The news that he died is wrong. 

The news is wrong (Principal Clause) 

(ii) The moon was shining brightly and we could see the road well. 

The moon was shining brightly (Principal Clause)

Sub-ordinate Clause – ऐसा उपवाक्य जो अपने अर्थ की पूर्णतया एवं स्पष्टता के लिए किसी दूसरे clause पर आश्रित होता है, Sub-ordinate Clause कहलाता है।

Note – Sub-ordinate clause किसी न किसी subordinating conjunction से प्रारंभ होता है।

Example :-

(i) The boy who stood first is my brother. 

who stood first (Subordinate clause) 

(ii) As soon as he came it started raining. 

As soon as he came (Subordinate clause) 

Co-ordinate Clause :-  ऐसा उपवाक्य जो अपने अर्थ की पूर्णतया एवं स्पष्टता के लिए अपने आप में परिपूर्ण होता है परंतु किसी न किसी co-ordinating conjunction से जुड़ा होता है।

Example :-

(i) The moon was shining brightly and we could see the road well. 

and we could see the road well (Co-ordinate clause)

Compound Sentence का निर्माण principal clause व co-ordinate clause के मिलने से होता है। प्रायः दिए हुए वाक्यों में principal clause देखने को मिल जाता है परंतु co-ordinate clause नहीं मिलता है। ऐसी स्थिति में co-ordinating conjunction का प्रयोग करके co-ordinate clause का निर्माण कर लेते हैं।

Co-ordinating conjunction निम्नलिखित चार प्रकार के होते हैं –

1. Cumulative Co-ordinating Conjunction (जोड़ बताने वाले संयोजक) :- and, both … and, as well as, not only ….. but also etc. 

2. Alternative Co-ordinating Conjunction (विकल्प का भाव रखने वाले संयोजक) :- or,

otherwise, neither …. nor, either ….. or etc. 

3. Adversative Co-ordinating Conjunction (विरोध का भाव रखने वाले संयोजक) :- yet, still, but, while etc. 

4. Illative Co-ordinating Conjunction (परिणाम बताने वाले संयोजक) :- so, therefore, for etc. 

Note :- Illative Co-ordinating Conjunction का प्रयोग वाक्यों के बीच reason – result का भाव होने पर प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Examples :-

(i) I invited him. He came. 

Compound – I invited him and he came. 

(ii) Ravi bought a book. He bought a pen also. 

Compound – Ravi bought not only a book but also a pen. 

Or

Compound – Ravi bought both a book and a pen. 

(iii) Boys play cricket. Girls play badminton. 

Compound – Boys play cricket but girls play badminton.

(iv) Ravi went to Agra. Mohan was also with him.

Compound – Not only Ravi but also Mohan went to Agra. 

(v) Kabir was a poet. He was a social reformer also. 

Compound – Kabir was not only a poet but also a social reformer.

(vi) Ravi was guilty. He was punished. 

Compound – Ravi was guilty so he was punished.
