Interchange of Degrees of Comparison

Degrees :-  जिस प्रकार Verb के first form, second form व third form होते हैं, ठीक उसी प्रकार adjective या adverb के तीन रूप होते हैं। जिन्हें हम Degree के नाम से जानते हैं।

Adjective या Adverb तीन रूप होते हैं जो इस प्रकार हैं –

1. Positive Degree (good) 

2. Comparative Degree (better) 

3. Superlative Degree (best) 

इन्हीं degrees का आपस में परिवर्तन करके भी transformation किया जाता है।

Degrees से संबंधित कुछ महत्वपूर्ण नियम इस प्रकार है –

Rule 1 –  यदि दिया हुआ वाक्य Affirmative Sentence हो तो Positive Degree प्रायः as …. as के बीच लिखा जाता है।

Rule 2 – यदि दिया हुआ वाक्य Negative Sentence हो तो Positive Degree प्रायः so …. as के बीच लिखा जाता है।

Rule – 3 Comparative degree में प्रायः एक तुलना प्रकट करने वाले शब्द than का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Rule – 4 Superlative Degree से पहले the का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Note – यदि Superlative Degree से पहले Possessive Adjective का प्रयोग हुआ हो तो Superlative Degree से पहले the का प्रयोग नहीं करते हैं।

Example –

Ravi is my the best friend. (Wrong)

Ravi is my best friend. (Correct) 

Rule 5 –  जो adjective दो या दो से अधिक syllables (भाग) से बने होते हैं उनकी comparative degree व superlative degree क्रमशः उनसे पहले more व most लगाने से बनता है।

Example –

Positive Degree – popular 

Comparative Degree – more popular 

Superlative Degree – most popular

Degree से संबंधित हमें प्रायः तीन तरह के प्रश्न देखने को मिलते हैं जो इस प्रकार है –

1. Positive Degree – Noun/Pronoun + ……..

Example – Ravi is as honest as Mohan. 

2. Positive Degree – No other + noun + ……

Example – No other poet is so famous as Kalidas.

3. Positive Degree – Very few + noun + ……

Example – Very few leaders are as great as Nehru.

Note – (i)  प्रायः positive degree का वाक्य affirmative sentence होने पर comparative degree बनाते समय वाक्य negative sentence के रूप में रखते है। इसके विपरीत positive degree का वाक्य negative sentence में होने पर comparative degree बनाते समय वाक्य का रूप affirmative sentence में रखते हैं।

(ii)  दो व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के बीच तुलना होने पर superlative degree नहीं बनाया जा सकता।

Examples – 

Positive – My sister is as intelligent as you. 

Comparative – You are not more intelligent than my sister.

Positive – Rohan is not so good as my brother. 

Comparative – My brother is better than Rohan.

Positive – Kalidas was as famous as Tagore. 

Comparative – Tagore was not more famous than Kalidas.

Positive – No other player is so great as Sachin. 

Comparative – Sachin is greater than any other player.

Superlative – Sachin is the greatest player. 

Positive – No other captain was so intelligent as Dhoni.

Comparative – Dhoni was more intelligent than any other captain.

Superlative – Dhoni was the most intelligent captain.

Superlative – Kalidas was one of the greatest poets.

Comparative – Gandhiji was more popular than many other leaders.
